Rings come in all shapes, sizes and metals.  Some are set with diamonds or other precious gems, while others have engravings ranging from the simplest design to the most intricate and beautiful.  Tungsten rings are no exception.

This is the first of three articles aimed at English speaking couples living in Denmark. Mixed couples, in which one partner is a Dane and the other comes from another country, are quite common. Very often the language they share is English and most of their communication is in English. Many couples experiencing difficulties in their relationship come to counseling, or ‘parterapi’ complaining of ‘poor communication’. Although it frequently turns out that there are many other difficulties in the relationship, communication is often a real and central issue. Quite apart from words having different meanings and nuances in the two languages, expressions and phrases are culturally anchored and color the exchange of ideas to a degree often not comprehended by those experiencing the difficulty. Instead, what they all too often experience is feeling misunderstood and rejected.

I have shared the ‘rules’ or ‘commandments’ for good communication with many client couples. Most have found the information useful and, with practice, have been able to improve some aspect of their interactive exchange of feelings, thoughts and wishes. It is, after all, you who sees, feels, means and wishes.  Besides, your own feelings and opinions are the only ones you really know anything about.  In a dialogue, your responsibility is to be you!  If you wish to include others, ask them to speak for themselves.

You can never be wrong when what you say is based on personal experience, – so start by just being who you are, before attempting to be someone you have not yet become.  If you do not dare to speak for yourself, say so, – and you are already well on your way.

 2.  Ask for what you want

Don’t engage in role-playing guessing games with other people. Your responsibility for contributing to good companionship is to clearly express your own needs and wishes. And who can do this better than yourself? By asking for what you feel you need, you give to others some of the very best you’ve got: – a clear message about something inside you.
