I am just as tickled to buy a new horse as I was when I got my first very own pony when I was a young girl. Where some gals buy expensive jewelry or purses, I buy dude ranch horses. Of course horses can’t be stuffed in a closet. They come complete with needs – feeding, shoeing, veterinary care – all of which cost you time and money. But who wants a dresser full of footwear when they could be out trail riding on a good horse in God’s country!

I purchased three horses while in Texas. One is Poncho, our new cowboy’s sorrel gelding – a nice horse that should work out well here at the Double Circle Ranch. Poncho will be herding strays later today – already earning his keep.

Our cowboy had a close friend who went to university and wasn’t making use of his horse. It is a mare and I don’t as a rule buy mares, but this gal is the sweetest-natured, gentlest horses that everybody can ride in safety – plus she rides well and ropes, etc. – good little ranch horse. She’s a little thin and needs a set of horseshoes but is going to be a keeper. The horse will get a lot of use by cowboys and cowgirls on our dude ranch all through their horseback riding vacation.

My third new horse is a little bit different. He is a very well-bred big sorrel – a real looker. Sadly, his owner became bedridden and died leaving his widow with her hands full of weanlings, yearlings, broodmares and two stallions. Meanwhile the fine horse became a gelding and was trained as a reiner. After that training, the horse basically didn’t get to do much. He got trail ridden by a neighbor from time to time, but spent most of his time in pens or stalls. So he is 7 going on 3 in training. But he is even tempered and really bright – and absolutely magnificent. We expect he will make a great guest ranch horse – he certainly has the potential.

My hubby has asked me to stop purchasing horses – at least for awhile.
